Meet Interior Designer Shea McGee

shea_blogStudio McGee (formerly Shea McGee Design) began after years of friends and neighbors knocking on her door begging for help designing their spaces. What began simply as a passion has since grown into a successful design business serving residential clients in Orange County, California.

We first saw Shea’s gorgeous work on Style Me Pretty where she sat down and gave a little insight behind her absolutely beautiful San Clemente home. Of course, we could not help but instantly fall in love with the nursery of her little girl Wren! The beautiful images taken by photographer Brooke Palmer sincerely capture the clean and calming atmosphere of the nursery. We jumped at the chance to interview Shea to learn even more about her style and inspiration.
Shea McGee Design_PR1_18.21. How would you define the style/philosophy of your work?
My goal is to help people fall in love with their homes. I have found that when people love where they live, they tend to clean often, spend more time at home and entertain friends and family. I like to discover what my clients love and put my twist on that style. I like to design fresh, clean spaces that mix eras and price points. My design philosophy is very evident in my daughter’s nursery as we mixed an antique gilt mirror with a mid-century modern crib and kept everything light and bright.

Check out how cute the dolls by BlaBla look sitting close to the oh so stylish Moroccan pouf!
SideBySide2. What were your goals and inspiration for Wren’s nursery?
I wanted this room to feel clean, bright and pretty. It was important to me that the nursery was beautiful, but also comfortable. I already had the wallpaper picked out long before I knew we were having a girl. After that ultrasound, I ordered it immediately! As a designer, I am always seeing new furniture and ideas and sometimes it is easy to get distracted. I had to constantly tell myself to stay focused! I mixed and matched the furniture for a more eclectic feel. The glider is a linen “look” fabric that cleans very easily and the plush rug feels amazing underfoot.

I believe every room should have a few personal touches – I danced for many years and I’m hoping the tutu painting inspires Wren in a small way. The gold mirror above the crib was a lucky antique find that I have had for several years.
Shea McGee Design_PR1_193. What is your favorite part of your daily work? When you reflect on the day, what is most rewarding?
I love that every day holds new creative opportunities to transform rooms into something that feels happy and inspired. No two rooms are the same, and that is a fun challenge. However, the most rewarding part of my job is that I can work from home and take Wren with me on all my shopping excursions.

With amazing work like this nursery, it’s no wonder all of Shea’s friends wanted her design help. From the wallpaper to the furniture choices we are absolutely loving this nursery! What piece or part of this nursery is inspiring you?

How To Create A Color Palette

Finding the perfect color palette for a baby’s nursery or child’s room can be a daunting task! How do you know what colors will work together? What if the colors look different in person than online? How do you make sure you don’t have too much of one color? Don’t be scared; selecting the perfect color palette is easier than you think! Here are some steps to consider as you start designing your next space:

Find an inspiration item. It can be a big part of the room like an amazing crib bedding set, or it can be a small accessory item such as a darling vintage art print scored at a flea market. Having one item to pull colors from is the perfect starting point.

Choose at least three different colors for the room. This “layering” of colors will add visual interest and depth to the space.

When in doubt, refer to the color wheel! Use both complementary colors (colors that are across from each other on the color wheel) and analogous colors (colors that are next to each other on the color wheel). Not sure what goes with that aqua duvet cover? Try accenting it with orange or navy!

Always attempt to obtain a sample of something you are thinking about ordering. It is a lot easier to avoid color faux pas when you have the fabric swatches and finish samples together in front of you. This will also help save you the hassle of returning items.

Bedding // Rug // Dresser //Personalized Wall Decal // Hanging Lantern // Butterfly Mobile

Make a mini inspiration board! There is a reason why professional interior designers create these boards for their clients. It is so much easier to ensure the room colors are balanced when you have images of all of the items together in one place.

Hopefully these tips make the start of creating your dream nursery or child’s room more fun and less stressful. We would love to hear if you have any secrets of your own!

Love the stripes on the wall? Here are a few pointers to help you DIY!

– Create a test board on a piece of poster board to ensure you like the way your stripe size and colors look together.
– Buy test paints at your local paint store before committing to the entire gallon can.
– Use high-quality painters tape or else the paint may bleed.
– Don’t forget to use a drop cloth to protect your floor.
– Make sure that the wall height is the same at all points on the wall. You may be surprised how different the ceiling heights can be, especially in older homes!
– Measure twice – paint once!
– Use a level to verify wall stripes are even.
– Paint the entire wall in a base coat and then paint the stripes on top of it to save time.
– Make sure each coat is completely dry before going on to the next color.

We hope this bright and beautiful nursery design will give you some inspiration! This color scheme would work perfectly for both a baby girl or baby boy’s room. For more design inspiration, check out our other designer rooms at! Happy decorating!

Sunshine Safari Modern Nursery Design!

We absolutely love it when our customers share their nursery designs with us! It’s so fun to see how you choose to use Rosenberry Rooms products in your kids’ rooms and to see the beautiful spaces you’ve created. Every once in a while, we come across a design that is so amazing, we have to share it with our blog readers!

A few months ago, a local Rosenberry Rooms customer came in our Raleigh store to meet with one of our designers and start putting together the elements of her nursery. Mrs. Reynolds looked at fabric options for her glider, picked out her crib bedding, discussed paint colors and more! We knew she’d made some great choices but we had no idea the finished product was going to be as beautiful as this!

How stunning?! My favorite part of the room is that the design is so unique and not overly girly. The safari theme keeps it youthful while the accent wall and modern furniture add stylish sophistication. Mrs. Reynolds decided on the Original Luxe Glider by Jennifer Delonge in the Ikat Natural Print Fabric with an accent pillow in the Elephant Pink Print Fabric. Instead of a matching ottoman, she went with a more contemporary choice (which we love!) and chose to add a pink moroccan pouf, similar to the ones found here. She also added the popular Tree Bookcase by Nurseryworks which fits in perfectly with the modern safari theme and adds yet another unique touch.

For art, she chose the Intricate Elephant in Flower Garden Canvas and the Intricate Giraffe Canvas, both by Oopsy Daisy artist, Valentina Ramos. The gorgeous Heart of Gold Crib Bedding by New Arrivals Inc. ties in the pink and yellow color scheme perfectly. The ceiling pendant creates floral shadows on the wall which I’m sure baby Coi Rene will love to look at! Not to mention her oversized giraffe friend watching over her as she sleeps.

Job well done Mrs. Reynolds! We are all so inspired by this gorgeous design and are so happy we could be a part of it!

Designer Rooms Spotlight!

Today I want to highlight a few of our awesome designer rooms! We know that has lots and lots of products to choose from and that it can sometimes be overwhelming trying to decide which lighting goes best with which bedding, will this rug look right in the room and so on. Our team of designers and merchandisers have tried to facilitate this for you by creating designer rooms based on various themes. Below are a few of my favorites from each category, but be sure and check out the rest of them for more inspiration!

The Forest Orchid 3-piece Crib Bedding Set by Annette Tatum serves as the inspiration for our Pretty in Purple Nursery. Whimsical lilac and green flowers on the crib bumper and lilac stripes on the skirt create a simple and sweet space for your little girl to rest and play. Accessorize in shades of purple with the organic cotton wall prints by Amenity, lighting by Maura Daniel, a plush hand-tufted wool rug in lilac and a comfy glider from Oilo.

Looking for something dramatically different? Our Wheels Motif Nursery is comfortable and contemporary. The Wheels Motif three-piece crib set in cobalt and the Cohen Glider with custom piping by Oilo creates a sophisticated ambiance with clean, uncluttered lines in your newborn son’s room. The vintage car-themed artwork by Aaron Christensen adds a playful touch!

Your little one will love to sleep in the cozy Sweet Haven Nursery. The White Pique Crib Bedding in Khaki by New Arrivals Inc. and charming art by Doodlefish are simple and classic. Creamy natural linens and satiny-soft cottons bring an effortless elegance to our Sweet Haven Nursery. We paired the bedding and room décor selections with Bratt Décor’s stunning Manhattan Collection.

Our fun Eve Bedroom is a breath of fresh air! The Boutique Pink bedding set is part of the Caden Lane designer collection. Bright, beautiful artwork by Oopsy Daisy artists Gale Kaseguma and the Winborg sisters, lighting by Jubilee, the Aqua shag rug, and cute picture frames complete this fun and funky girl’s room.

Our Owls Sky Bedroom brings classic woodland features and bold hues of green and blue into your boy’s room. A duvet cover and tailored sham in the playful Owls Sky print by DwellStudio is paired with the Elite Reflections Collection by Lea Children’s furniture for a classic and timeless appeal. Throw in a fun wall decal from Alphabet Garden Designs and playful character art to complete this boy’s room.
