Creative Storage Solutions for Kids' Rooms

Rosenberry Rooms President, Susie Fougerousse, shares some of her tips for organizing children’s rooms with creative storage solutions. With 5 children of her own ranging from 11 months to 14 years, she has definitely become an expert on this subject! Check out some of these tips below and incorporate the ones that work best for you and your home.

Functional and stylish storage is one of the most essential elements to consider when decorating a child’s room. Great organization solutions are so important for every child at any age, whether in a nursery, playroom or teen’s room. While the items needing to be organized may change from diapers and dolls, to books and homework, the same basic solutions can be carried through each stage. I am a big believer in having a good mix of both permanent and portable storage solutions in a child’s room, that are transitional and versatile enough to grow with your child.

1) Every child’s room should be equipped with a sturdy book shelf for displaying treasures, books, pictures and more. Selecting a basic style in a neutral color will allow the parents maximum versatility for use over the long term. As the child grows, the uses and consequently the look of the shelf, will naturally adapt to the child’s changing needs.

2) If the room allows for it and your budget permits, built-in book cases with doors and drawers are a classy way to enhance the look of the room while providing valuable and timeless storage for odds and ends. Window seats are also a charming option, and serve as a great area for seating and storage!

3) Portable storage options, such as vintage painted wooden crates or personalized metal containers are a stylish option for children of all ages. With an endless array of colors, patterns, fonts and shapes to choose from, these storage containers are a cool and decorative addition to any room. Boxes and bins can be stored on bookshelves, under beds or simply on the floor for easy access. Children can even tote these around the house from room to room.

4) Unique, stand-out pieces are also important. Storage solutions can sometimes be uninviting so it’s important to utilize pieces that are both interesting and functional. This Tree Bookcase by Nurseryworks is an excellent example that would work great in a kid’s room for storing and displaying books, games, dolls and more!

In summary, room organization doesn’t have to be boring! Keeping toys and clutter off the ground and out of sight is now easier than ever with the creative and functional options available today. With a little imagination your child’s belongings can be tucked away neatly in storage that works and looks great, too.

Meet Sophie Demenge of Oeuf!

Oeuf (pronounced UH-F), which means “egg” in French, is about simple, clean design applied to the necessities of a well-equipped nursery. Husband and wife owners, Michael Ryan and Sophie Demenge, understand the importance of intuitive, space-saving designs that make sense for a cohesive look throughout the home, especially for the demands of a modern lifestyle. Oeuf’s designs have done an amazing job of finding that balance between quality and functionality without sacrificing style and most importantly, safety. They also employ eco-conscious manufacturing processes that promote sustainability and make this an all around great line of quality children’s furniture. I recently had the opportunity of seeing their line at the ABC Kids Expo and immediately fell in love with this simplistic yet stunning collection. To see the video we shot at the show, click here. If you have a modern decorating style or simply want beautiful furniture you can trust for your children, be sure to check out Oeuf and keep reading to discover the inspiration behind this clean and refreshing line.

How would you define Oeuf’s style philosophy?

We don’t really have a philosophy per se. It’s more a lifestyle. Less is more. Always buy quality, know who/where things are made.

What inspired you to become a designer and start a business?

I always made things and so did Michael. When we met, I was finishing my degree in industrial design at Pratt, Michael already had a factory in Brooklyn so it just seemed like the more natural thing to do.

Why did you choose to design children’s furniture?

When we were expecting our first child we couldn’t find anything that made sense for us. The choices were very few, traditional and the quality was not great at all. We found there was a huge disconnect between the nursery and with the rest of the home so we decided to make everything for our daughter. The first piece was a bouncy chair than we made many crib prototypes and bedding and well pretty much everything!

What is your favorite part of your daily work when you reflect on the day, what is most rewarding?

My days are always different. I do love walking to the office with Michael after dropping off the kids to school (which is on the way to the office). It’s a nice time to have a bit of quiet catching up time before the crazy day. The most rewarding part is coming home to my children at the end of the day.

If you had to pick a favorite piece from your collection, what would it be?

I like all the pieces, I have lived with those pieces. They correspond to a specific time in my life, meeting my kids needs and indulging design-wise with my husband Michael. One of our latest pieces, the Perch Bunk Bed/fort was designed for our then 6 year old son. I lay in that bed with him every night to read stories and sing or play with sheets to make forts. All the knitted goodies are sprinkled all around the house and my kids’ friends’ houses. It’s really fun to design, especially now with both our kids giving insights and ideas.

Do you have any news that you would like to share, perhaps about upcoming designs or introductions to your line?

Yes lots of news but top secret for now!

Now…Just for Fun

Favorite Food – I go through phases and when I like something I can eat it everyday 3/times/day. Drives everyone crazy in my house.

Favorite TV Show – I love Frontline

Favorite Weekend Activity – We all enjoy getting away from the city and spend time in the woods upstate on the weekend.

Favorite Band – Kind of the same idea as food. I go through phases, right now I am in a nostalgic French mood and listen to Charles Trenet/Georges Brassens/Serge Gainsbourg all day long… Almost over though.

New Furniture Collections Are Here!

Over seven new gorgeous furniture collections have just been added to and I can’t wait to share them with you! We have been searching long and hard for the perfect designer furniture to bring that traditional look to your nursery or child’s room and we hope you will fall in love with these new collections just like we have. With so many options you are sure to find the perfect piece for your room or an entire cohesive collection if you are starting from scratch. Choose from the feminine Venezia Collection, the rich chocolate April Collection, the chestnut Cape Cod Collection and so many more gorgeous options! Not to mention, all of the cribs are convertible so your investment will last for years and years. Check out some of the pictures below for a peek into these stunning collections!

Featuring bun feet, carved molding, and a rich, distressed chestnut finish, the Cape Cod collection is sure to bring warmth into your baby’s nursery.

The creamy vanilla finish and feminine detailing of the Venezia collection will easily coordinate with any girl’s nursery or bedroom décor.

Finished in a rich chocolate wood stain, the April collection of children’s furniture features clean lines, bowed case-fronts, and understated contemporary styling.

The sophisticated design of the Ravenna collection brings nostalgic, old-world elegance into your baby girl’s nursery. It features details of fine craftsmanship found in European furniture, including serpentine pilasters, elegant moldings and shaped rails.

The traditional design of the Summer’s Evening collection in both a fresh white and antique black finish will bring timeless style to your child’s room and will perfectly complement any bedroom décor.

Lastly, the Regency collection, complete with a warm English walnut finish creates a rich and welcoming environment in your nursery or even your teen’s room. What do you think of the new collections?!

Meet Pockets of Newport Cottages!

During the ABC Kids Expo, we had the pleasure of meeting Newport Cottages owner, Pockets Alvarez and his wife Cristina. I have always been a huge fan of their line of cottage-style children’s furniture, but after meeting them I am really hooked! Seeing their passion for the company and learning that they created it out of their desire to create beautiful rooms for their own children, makes this line truly special. The team at Newport Cottages knows what it means to create fun and quality furniture for children. All of their pieces are made in the US with a dedication to using only the best hardwoods to ensure quality and durability. They also have almost 20 different finishes to choose from, allowing you to create a custom room specially made for your little one. I hope that after reading this interview with Pockets, it will be as clear to you as it is to me the passion this company has for helping other families create dream rooms for their children.

How would you define the Newport Cottages style philosophy?

I would say that our styles are classic and relaxed. All of our collections are built with quality and integrity, and our custom finishes and colors are perfect tools for personalizing each piece.  Providing quality, US made furniture is a cornerstone of our company.

What inspired you to become a designer and start a business?

I must have been about 12 years old when I started to draw and paint. I still have many of my drawings and some paintings from back then.  I thought maybe I would be an architect but ended up in business school.  Newport Cottages gives me a creative outlet–the opportunity to design and create furniture.

Why did you choose to design children’s furniture?

Our company actually began focused on adult cottage style furniture like coffee tables, buffets, etc.  My wife, Cristy and I were shopping for our son’s big boy bed, and I know you’ve probably heard this a million times, but we just couldn’t find anything with the quality and style that we were looking for.  We remember he wanted a blue bed so we made a twin size version of our Country Bed with a dresser and nightstand.

We ended up having a great response at our first tradeshow. Our cottage style finishes are perfect for our young ones.  Children’s furniture allows for a greater expression through color which is always fun.

What is your favorite part of your daily work when you reflect on the day, what is most rewarding?

I love it when I hear of a customer that purchased Newport Cottages for their nursery years ago, and now that they’re planning their big girl or big boy room, they again choose our line.  There’s no greater compliment than that, and I feel honored and privileged.

If you had to pick a favorite design from your collection, what would it be?

It’s hard to choose.  I like the simple elegance of the Celine Collection, but also the traditional look of the Taylor Collection.  I also really like the Ricki Crib with upholstered panels.

What sets Newport Cottages apart from other designers and collections in your industry?

Our industry is primarily comprised of imported product, high volume and a low value on quality.  We are proud to create a high quality product right here in the US.  The ability to customize finishes and personalize each piece is something that is rarely seen in our industry.

Do you have any news that you would like to share, perhaps about upcoming designs or introductions to your line?

As far as news…well many of you know that this month is Breast Cancer Awareness month.  To raise awareness, our specially designed “Hope Crib” is part of a very worthy cause and a portion of each sale will benefit the Susan G Komen Foundation.  We appreciate Rosenberry Rooms for their gracious help in showcasing this crib during October.  For those in the Newport Beach area, please join us for our exclusive cocktail event Friday October 28th from 5 to 7pm hosted by Newport Cottages and Little Crown Interiors, the creators of the Hope Crib.

Now…Just for Fun

Favorite Food

Thai food is great, but then again so is a perfectly grilled steak.  On a few occasions I’ve had this rib eye steak with a very light coffee rub served medium rare… delicious.  For dessert I would go with a Crème Brulee or something moist with rich chocolate.

Favorite TV Show

It really depends on the mood I’m in.  I think that Bored to Death on HBO is very funny, intelligent and edgy.  CNN, is always good, and the jury is still out on the new Two and a Half Men with Ashton Kutcher.

Favorite Movie

Maybe Pulp Fiction.  Quentin Tarantino’s a great director and the cast in that movie is great.  There are so many great movies with highly talented actors such as Denzel Washington and I can’t leave out Al Pacino.

Favorite Weekend Activity

Spending time with my family above all.  It’s difficult but so important to slow down, appreciate and enjoy time with family.  Cristy and I have 3 boys, so most of the time we’re running around with them to sporting and school events. I also like to road and mountain bike when I find the time.

Favorite Band

Perhaps the Dave Matthews Band which I recently went to see in concert.  The Eagles are another band that is definitely on my favorite list.  Others would include Jack Johnson, Neil Young, Brubeck and Paul Desmond.
