Meet Artist Shelly Kennedy, Creator of Children's Art!

Shelly Kennedy is not only a talented artist, but a mom and business owner as well! Her business and passion merged when she hand-painted a canvas for her own daughter’s nursery. Shelly loves to combine chic themes with a pastel color palette to make classic art for kids’ rooms and nurseries with a timeless style. Artist Shelly KennedyHow would you define the style philosophy of your work?

Colorful and fun… classic yet current… meets.. sophisticated whimsy.

What inspired you to become an artist?

I have been an artist since as long as I can remember. I’m not exactly sure what originally inspired me . I have always been captivated by creative activities – painting, drawing, crafting, sewing… all of it!  When I was little, I’d spend hours decorating my doll house (wallpapering, painting tiny wall art to hang, sewing bedding, I once hand-painted mini bricks for the entire exterior of my dolls house and added mortar detail with a tooth pick – it took all summer!)

Why did you choose to create children’s art?

I tend to gravitate towards children’s illustrations and artwork with elements of whimsy and humor. When I was younger (high school and college) I painted many murals for children’s rooms (for friends and friends of friends – it was my side job!) When our first child was born we were living in an apartment and could not paint on the walls- so I hung up a large canvas to cover the walls – and started painting a magical scene with a swimming swan and the man in the moon! We still have that very first one… it has moved from and to many houses with us!  That is how drooz studio started… that first wallhanging in 1997… I started to sell to local baby boutiques in the Chicago area – and then branched out nationally a few years later.

What is your favorite part of your daily work when you reflect on the day, what is most rewarding?

I enjoy when I get a chance to talk to customers (which unfortunately is not very often) I like to hear the stories about how my art has touched them or their children – how it inspires a first word or bedtime ritual, how it was celebrated in a move to a big “kid” bed or new house, or how drooz art has become a family tradition gift for each child or grandchild.

What sets your art apart from others in your industry?

I try my best just to “design from the heart” – keeping in mind current color trends and themes – but always creating a piece that I’d be thrilled to hang in my own home. Over the years this industry has just exploded with art & artists – there are now so many choices for consumers… it is really a challenge to stay fresh and ahead of the game! I find it an interesting challenge to balance the maturing of my style and the direction it takes – nurturing it to grow, but not change it so much as to deviate from the look and brand of drooz I have worked to developed.

If you had to pick a favorite piece from your collection, what would it be?

That’s not easy but I’d have to say the You Are A Work of Art Canvas Reproduction. I, of course, love the image itself… but more importantly love the message it illustrates. A gentle reminder of how special we all are – all different, all masterpieces, all meant to inspire others..sometimes praised, sometimes criticized, sometimes lifting the mood, sometimes depicting loneliness or darkness, but always a precious, treasured, individual creation that should be celebrated.

You are a work of art

Do you have any news that you would like to share, perhaps about upcoming designs or introductions to your line?

I’ve just developed a collection of travel inspired pieces for Oopsy Daisy – “come away with me” featuring Paris, New York, Venice, India, Japan & London. I’m looking forward to adding to the line – I’m headed to Morocco and Madrid next week… so I know I’ll find more inspiration there. I feel a shift happening in my design style. For over thirteen  years I designed art geared towards infants and toddlers. Now, and as my own children are growing up, I have been inspired to “grow” my design style as well.

I’m  working on more designs for teens, home and family.
