Meet Serge Soussan of My Blankee

A baby blanket is undoubtedly one of the first things we all grew attached to. For babies, their first blanket provides a sense of security and a soft and comfy feel your baby will cherish. Babies are very impressionable and the importance of building loving attachments is an important part of their growth and development. Isn’t it incredible that a simple baby blanket can be so essential for your little one? Some of the most popular baby blankets out there come from designer Serge Soussan of My Blankee. Serge was inspired by his son Luca Charles to develop these hypoallergenic, high quality blankets loved by so many. The blankets come in endless different colors and patterns, you can find just the right one for your little one at With that said, it is my pleasure to introduce the creator of My Blankee, Serge Soussan, and his incredible story of how the love for his son grew into this well-known brand of top of the line, luxurious baby blankets!

How would you define the My Blankee’s style philosophy?

My Blankee was born when our son, Luca, was born. Luca’s first words were “my blankee”, and that’s when the realization struck. Our poem was developed for him:

I love my little blankee,

I take it wherever I go

It keeps me warm and cozy

At home or on the go

Yet the idea that spurred our company is this: *A baby blanket is a transitional object-absolutely vital to the development of the mind. You see, a baby will undoubtedly feel extreme anxiety caused by increasing separation from mommy. This is where a baby blanket comes in-a security blanket is called such because it is essential to the feeling of security of the baby. As a great aid to this security, the mother should sleep with the blanket first in order for it to absorb her scent. As the periods of separation grow, the baby will realize that he/she is a separate entity and is dependent on others. But a baby blanket is always there. The baby blanket smells like mommy, like home, and it is the first possession of the child – the only thing  that is truly his own. In this way, it is a coping mechanism; the child will, for comfort, invent a bond with mommy by way of his/her blankee. This develops the mind to eventually make use of objects, symbols, and illusion.

*These ideas in part given to us by: Winnicott, D. W. via “Transitional Objects and Transitional Phenomena”. The International Journal of  Psychoanalysis 1953.

Remember the instructions for your blankee:

1. Wash me first

2. Sleep with me so I have your warm special scent

3. Give me to baby to feel warm and safe

4. Don’t leave infant unattended

What inspired you to become a designer and start a business?

Growing up in Beverly Hills and being surrounded by celebrities and fashion and the topnotch department stores like Neiman Marcus, Saks Fifth Avenue, and Barney’s, not mentioning that I lived on Rodeo Drive down the street from the Beverly Hills Hotel inspired me to be very interested in fashion designers like Calvin Klein, Ralph Lauren, Lacoste, Burberry, Prada, Chanel, Gucci, and Jean Paul Gaultier and many more.

Why did you choose to design baby blankets?

My son Luca Charles was born with a bad case of eczema and asthma. His skin was so dried out that he would scratch himself until he bled. We were prescribed by doctors to apply all over his body a special cream that contained cortisone and a low percentage of steroids. So I decided to make a hypoallergenic micro-fiber warped knit called dot velour with a 3 inch satin border so that I could swaddle my baby in the softest fabric in the world so that he would not scratch himself anymore because he would be preoccupied with the softest blanket in the world.

What is your favorite part of your daily work … when you reflect on the day, what is most rewarding?

When a customer calls or emails and says that her child is in complete adoration of their My Blankee blanket. When a customer says that they tried to give their child another baby blanket from a different company because they lost theirs and the baby throws the blanket at them while standing up in the crib screaming and crying for their My Blankee. Thank God for our loyal baby customers.

If you had to pick a favorite design from your collection, what would it be?

I love all my collections and My Blankee’s best seller is the dot velour signature blanket…every day, every month, every year.

What sets My Blankee apart from other baby blanket designers?

The most famous celebrity baby blanket in the world and has the largest selection of baby blankets in the world with the most colors and prints and fabric variety in the world.
